Cherise, Utah

I'm 25 years old and was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in October 2000. Currently I work as a freelance web designer and graphic designer. I'm also in school full time for graphic design. I'll be graduating May 2010. I'm married and have been for almost two years. My husband is very supportive of me and my diabetes. He's supportive of everything that I do. We have no kids only what I call "furkids". My "furkid" is a 1 year old black and white cat named Khaos. He fits his name :)

Jessica, Arizona

Hey,

My name is Jessica, I’m 13, I live in Gilbert, Arizona just east of Phoenix, and I am a Type One Diabetic. I like rock climbing, playing Guitar Hero, and hanging out with my friends and family. What I don’t like is diabetes. We’re all told that diabetes is a “manageable” condition. But, managing diabetes is like battling a never-ending fire. You can keep the flames at bay but you can never stop the source. I am dedicated to raising diabetes awareness, living strong and feeling good. Like I said, I am Type One - one-of-a-kind that is, not just diabetic. Grab some Type One Clothing gear and march to your own beat as well. Join me, join Zoey and let’s do something about finding a cure and getting the word out.

Katrina, California

My name is Katrina and I am 19 years old and have been diabetic for seven and a half years. I was diagnosed two weeks before entering sixth grade and because of this I had the chance to know a life without diabetes, however as the years go on my memories of not having to be so nutritionally aware are slowly slipping away. When I was diagnosed on August 17, 2001 the way I lived my life changed forever. No longer was I able to be a carefree eater. As a child I had a huge fear of needles, so when my pediatrician informed me of the possible diagnosis the look on her face was one of great sympathy. She knew from then on my life would be filled with great responsibility, frustration and stress in coping with this never ending roller coaster of a disease. While diabetes has definitely changed my life not all of it has been bad. When I katrinawas 13 years old I began going to Camp Conrad Chinnock, a diabetic sleep away summer camp, one that I continue to attend today. The memories and experiences I have had at camp have greatly enriched my life and helped me make some of my closest friends today. Although diabetes has helped create the person I am today, that does not mean I enjoy the 1,825 finger pricks I do annually to check my blood sugar and the never-ending amount of pump site changes. I try as much as I can to see diabetes as a way to bring people together and a challenge that I overcome everyday I live with it, helping to give me a sense of accomplishment and feeling of empowerment, that diabetes does not rule my life, it just makes it a lot more difficult.

Kenny, California

kenny

My name is Kenny, born and raised in San Diego, California.

I was diagnosed Novemeber 14 2007 with type 1 diabetes at the age of 17. I am a sports fan, I enjoy movies, making music and traveling. I love street art (thats why I would enjoy tagging some street signs with "stop diabetes" stickers haha.) I love having diabetes, it makes me a healthier person and I love the "diabetic family" that comes along with having diabetes.

Ryan, Germany

Ryan

My name is Ryan and I'm originally from Landstuhl, Germany and I am 30 years old.

I'm currently a student at Ohio University in Athens, OH. After this upcoming year I'm going to be going to law school and I want to focus on Health Law. I'm a type-one diabetic, and I was diagnosed the day after Christmas, 2007. I'd been really sick for about nine months, lost well over one hundred pounds and when I finally went to the doctor my bg was 577 an my first A1c was 17.3. It was a huge shock since no one in my family is diabetic and there's no history of it in either side of my family. I was pretty shocked and sad at first but then I realized at least this is a manageable thing and I decided that I'd rather be around when we cure it than not.

The thing I appreciate most about diabetes is that it has made me appreciate my family and friends and the little things in life so much more than I used to, the only thing that I really dislike (aside from the cost of insulin) is the ignorance of most people surrounding it's cause and treatment, oh and the insurance companies in this country had better watch out, because when I'm done with law school their days of ripping off diabetics are over ;-)
